Hints and Tips:

Week 1: Introduction

This week’s topic is an Introduction. You have the following activities to complete:

1. Read this blog & find out about the program.

2. Discover a few pointers from lifelong learners and learn how to nurture your own learning process.

Tip 1:

Some of the "things" have podcasts where you can click the play button and listen for more information about the exercise. Many of the podcasts were developed by Helene Blowers at PLCMC to help her staff. When you click the button, you may need to wait a few seconds for the podcast to begin to play. If for any reason a podcast does not play, don't fret. The written "thing" has all of the critical information to help you learn.

Tip 2:

As a part of the audio/visualpresentation: "7 1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners" (http://www.plcmc.org/public/learning/player.html),there is a "Learning Contract" that some of the staff might want to print out and use. However, you may find that it doesn't load. Please click the link if you would like to use the Learning Contract.  Also, here is a link to the 7 1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners.  (You will have to click an additional link on your way to these pages).

Tip 3:

Here is a list of documents that were generated by some of the folks who presented demonstrations of the various technologies at the Tech Fair:

Blog 101 -

ITunes and MP3 Players -

Wikis and Open Source -

Tip 4:

Julia Mepham of the Abingdon Branch offers this bit of advice:

This is a section from my latest blog, please read. Many thanks to Annette for her persistence in solving this Challenge!
Julia Mepham - MLL 2.0 Julia's Blog:

Important note: Challenge!!! If you are in Week 4 #8 of the 23 Things, scroll down until you see the Discovery items. "3. Create a post in your blog about this exercise. Optional: If you're up to the challenge, you can provide the URL address to your public bloglines account." The item on the page tells you to click on the Share Tab in Bloglines. When you do this you will find the Public URL. You copy the Public URL from your Bloglines site, into your Participants Blog, so that other users can share see your feeds. What is not mentioned anywhere is how to get a USERNAME to add to the end of the Public URL. You need to go into the Blog tab on Bloglines and set up a blog there in order to get a username. Without this you cannot use the Public URL to share your Feeds. I was very confused by this whole section and Annette, through messing around and trial and error, finally figured out about the Blog username. You need never use the actual blog again, as long as you have the username. Note: To share your feeds, when you fill in the required information on the blog page, make sure you mark everything Public (not Private) or no one else will be able to see your feeds.

Tip5:

You may have this problem when you start Week 6: The website that is hosting the Del.icio.us tutorial will send you this message:

ERROR:  This blog is on hold because its bandwidth has been exceeded. Please contact your blog provider.

So many people are accessing the tutorial at the same time (all of us 2.0 folk, probably) that it is creating a problem for other users of the blog provider.

Typically, in a situation like this one, an alternate, or mirror site might be created.  If I hear of a solution to this issue, I'll post it here.  akg

Regards,

Irmgarde, Maurice & Annette
